1. Germs- Germs don't stop breeding just because they are kept at a low temperature. They don't spread as fast, but they do spread. Cold temperatures don't kill them.
2. Money- When you clean out your fridge, you develop a mental inventory of what you need to replace or what you already have and don't need to buy again. Recently, I threw out over $300 of food from a client's refrigerator. All of it was food that had expired. A lot of it was fresh produce-- bags and bags of wilted spinach-- or dairy products-- molded specialty cheeses and high end yogurts. Most of the items had expired in the last two months, but I found condiments 4 years past their expiration dates.
3. Health- Did you know that your fridge could be making you sick?
* Whirlpool Home Appliances founded National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day in 1999. They created the holiday to encourage people to clean out their refrigerator in advance of the upcoming holidays. You could even call a toll-free line for cleaning tips.
